Let’s face it….we live in an age of chatter and we have all the tools at our fingertips to promote it. I think we have come to expect that out of all this chatter there is a steady stream of reliable information that can shape intelligent decisions. Alas, the events in Washington and in corporate boardrooms over the last several years has thrown that conclusion under the bus time and time again and all we seem to be left with is….well, chatter. The health care debate is a fine example. If we accept that facts and figures don’t lie, then we need to admit that our healthcare system is sick. But the chatter continues and no long-term solution seems to get done. And sure, the reform was passed, but now it is likely the chatter will force it to end up in the courts. Great.
Thankfully, however, things are getting done to provide help and hope to those who cannot wait for some good to come from all the debate and foot dragging. Last fall, I had the opportunity to witness it first hand at Connect Care, a local hospital serving the under- and uninsured, when they hired me to work on a new branding video. Connect Care is just one of many institutions that labors to bring help and hope to those most in need while others only chatter about it. For the staff, the hours are long and pay lean. Many doctors volunteer much of their time. The pursuit of philanthropy and other funding is ceaseless. The proverbial tunnel often seems as dark as it is endless. But the commitment of all engaged is enviable. This is mission work, without a label of religious or secular, without a hint of smugness or expectation of a pat on the back. It is just work that needs to be done but in the doing helps in a way that just might make the community a healthier, if not a better place. Personally, I find it rather ironic that those in Washington who are chattering, debating and bickering over health care reform will never have to worry about having to go to a place like Connect Care. However, maybe they need to get out more and see how it is places like Connect Care are helping to keep the American healthcare system from going on life support.
